Five Things We Want to See in Dekaranger 10 Years After
How much further can the Dekarangers break the Internet?

We knew it was coming. We’ve all seen the magazine photoshoots from a few years back where the entire cast got together again in their uniforms. We know they all voiced their American counterparts in the Japanese dub of Power Rangers S.P.D., and we saw the cast in a recent promotional video for the series’ Blu-Ray release. As we soon found out, that’s not all they filmed!

Yesterday’s announcement of Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger 10 YEARS AFTER is still driving excitement within the Tokusatsu fandom to unprecedented levels! It will probably continue to do so way past the release date of Oct 7. After Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger kickstarted the trend, it was only a matter of time.

Let’s face it. Dekaranger is one of the best Super Sentai series of all time. With an extremely likeable cast, some cool character and mecha designs, great stories and music, Dekaranger was probably the definitive team of the decade gone by, and also the most well-loved Sentai series amongst the English-speaking fanbase, as it was one of the first (if not the very first) Sentai to be fully fansubbed during its run. It was an entry point for many when English subs were still hard to come by.

Personally, I was a huge fan of the series myself. Some of you may remember a localised Dekaranger fanfiction with an expansive universe I wrote that was up at the old Japan Hero Access forum, before it closed down and tokuAsia came up. A lot of my old writing and exploration into video were related to Dekaranger, and I am truly happy to see it receive the 10 YEARS AFTER treatment.

I would kill to see the Dekarangers teaming up with the Next Generation Space Sheriffs, but let’s do this one step at a time. So here’s a list of five things all Dekaranger fans might want to see in the upcoming V-Cinema special!

5. Reference to Past Events

As fans, we absolutely love universe building, and a lot has happened in the past decade. Ban went to the Fire Squad and returned with a new toy. Tetsu lost and regained his Gold Badge within a year. The Great Legend War happened, and Jasmine, Ban & Doggie Kruger met the Gokaigers, amongst other off-screen events.

We will certainly get a brand new adventure for our heroes, but subtle references to past events would expand the show’s universe, give a deeper insight into the characters and how they have grown since their last appearances. After all, the screenplay is going to be written (or has already been written) by Arakawa Naruhisa, who was the head writer for Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger.

4. A Cameo from Psychic Lover

Still rocking after a decade

With a distinctive musical style, the Psychic Lover duo first stamped their presence in the Super Sentai world with the opening theme and insert songs for Dekaranger. During the series run, the band even performed in silver-coloured versions of the SPD uniform, leading to speculation that guitarist IMAJO had been casted as Tetsu/DekaBreak (Now does anyone remember this at all? Yep, you’re that old.). How about bringing them in-universe as a duo of hotshot cops from outer space? They could come in for a short scene, or have an integral part in the story.

Not sure about their acting chops though, but for the sake of having them be part of the reunion it’ll pass no matter what.

3. The Narrator

Narration makes everything sound cool

No Dekaranger iteration will be complete without the voice of Furukawa Toshio. Furukawa’s narration accompanied almost everything in the show, from the regular opening piece to Sen-chan’s ‘Thinking Pose’ to the explanation of the Judgement or Deka Suits systems every single time they happened. However, instead of just using stock audio, we hope that Furukawa is brought back for new recordings.

2. DekaMaster NEVER STOP

I’m CEO, b*** I’m CEO, b****

As Chief of the Earth division, Doggie Kruger will certainly be in this one, and with voice actor Inada Tetsu confirmed as part of the cast list, there is little doubt we will be seeing Boss again.  However, the question that remains is—Will we see Kruger take up the DekaMaster identity again? Kruger hasn’t transformed since the Great Legend War, going by onscreen continuity.

The stakes should be as high as possible in a V-Cinema, so fans can certainly hope. While we’re at it, we’re also hoping to see Ishino Mako’s Shiratori Swan again!

1. The Dekarangers’ Individual Quirks

And the Emmy for Most Likeable Sentai Cast goes to…

After ten years, does Umeko still take a dip in the bathtub with her rubber duckies after a mission? Does Sen-chan still do his trademark ‘Thinking Pose’ to gain a new perspective into a case? What about the budding romance between those two? Does Tetsu still crossdress? How has the friendship between the ever-squabbling Ban and Hoji developed over the years? And Jasmine, is she still prone to breaking the fourth wall? These are all the hallmarks of each character and the writers should spare no expense in including them.

One last hope: A cast version of the theme song, please Toei!
