“Saban’s Power Rangers” Fan Screening a Success!

A combined fan screening for Saban’s Power Rangers was held at Cathay Cineleisure on the movie’s opening weekend, joined by a very Special Guest in Jason Chan, who played Cam/the Green Samurai Ranger in Power Rangers Ninja Storm.

Co-organised by TokuCos SingaporeKamen Rider/Super Sentai (Singapore) and some of us at tokuAsia, this was the first time a Tokusatsu-themed event had been held in Singapore, and also the first time all three fan communities came together to organise a combined community event. Read more

When the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series began broadcasting in 1993, it was a television phenomenon that launched a still-running media franchise seen around the world. The showrunners of the original series probably didn’t expect to create pop culture history, but by virtue of how different their show was from children’s programming of that era, audiences lapped it up and its influence will still be seen for some time to come.

Saban’s Power Rangers adapts the original series’ teenage-pals-defeat-evil-with-explosions-and-self-discovery-premise for contemporary audiences by giving the main cast issues relevant to the Snapchat generation to deal with. Set in a suburban town, five misfit teenagers who share the same detention class make a cosmic discovery that simultaneously trivialises and solves their individual problems.

Five Greatest Power Ranger Moments

With Dean Israelite’s reboot looming over our heads (only 15 more days!!!), it is certainly an appropriate time to celebrate the legacy of Power Rangers.

Clocking in at over 830 episodes over 24 years, the series at its best has delivered some absolutely breathtaking displays of heroism that would put even Captain America to shame, and occasionally, sombre defeats for the heroes that have shocked generations of young viewers into tears.
